ABSTRACT DEL KEBOOK
As in every memorial there are stories of real life in Albona (Istria), sad facts, happy moments and certain personal opinions. The story is fluent, colorful and, at times, with intense literary tones. Some explanations from the editor have been inserted in boxed brackets. Then there is an "Afterword", by Elio Varutti, in Italian. "Laterina floats on a Tuscan hill, levitating lordly over the flood plain of the Arno. The town’s ancient stones are set in the fertile agricultural triangle with Firenze, Siena and Arezzo at its points. I was 9 the year my brothers — Bruno and Franko — and our parents — Giuseppe and Maria — set foot on Tuscan soil. Bruno was almost six months old and squirming in mom’s arms, Franko was three years old; dad was 42 and mom was 32. Laterina was our first home in Italy. Surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards fed by the eternaly-flowing Arno, you’d think Laterina an idyllic and enviable locale. The scene held a lot of promise, even for refugees like us".
