ABSTRACT DEL KEBOOK

He wasn’t yet a monk. He was just a boy helping his father in the forge. The man worked iron, and his specialty was swords. After the Viking raids and the news circulating about their looting and killings, the blacksmith built a sword for his son, a makhaira forged with the wisdom of a man who had no rival in his art. He placed it in his son’s hands and ordered him to kill the Northmen. The blacksmith didn’t know that his son hated the war; he wasn’t inclined to hatred and he would never betray the law of Christ. He never killed anyone with that sword, but he didn’t abandon it, not even when he consecrated his life to God. He kept it hidden in the closet of his room in a monastery and a young monk saw it He said him that it was a pure weapon, a weapon that had never seen blood. The monastery was attacked; still today the blame is attributed to the Viking raiders. In reality, it was something else that wreaked the havoc: a diabolical creature, a shocker being that torn apart dozens of bodies. The monk rushed to his closet and, for the first time, he wielded his sword. He looked for the beast and found it about to kill the young novice. Before hitting him, the creature heard a voice calling it and, in turning around, it saw the blacksmith monk threatening it with his sword. For a brief moment, the beast stepped back, but then it didn’t hesitate to attack him. It killed the monk, but its throat was injured, staining the white blade with its blood. Immediately after, the beast disappeared, moaning under the stunned gaze of the young novice. He buried the sword with his owner and, that same night, an angel revealed to him in a dream that the beast was a Messor antithei, a servant of Satan, hired to reap souls for his amusements. He didn’t tell anyone what had happened; no one would believe him. Much later, however, he revealed what had happened to his confessor father, also unveiling the place where the monk who had saved his life was buried. The story of the Makhaira that puts demons to flight became a legend, but there are those who give the right weight to legends. The sword was recovered following the dream of a Coptic bishop from Cairo who converted to Catholicism a few years earlier. In the dream, a woman of divine appearance revealed to him that the Makhaira, if it had been wielded by the right man, would put an end to the massacres of the demon. The sword was kept in the Monastery of St. Catherine in Egypt, and when the truce was over, the Holy See claimed it.
